Alpina

Alpina

Alpina Sports is a leading name in the world of outdoor and winter sports footwear, particularly renowned for its heritage in backcountry cross-country ski boots.
Alpina traces it's origins back to 1947 when, in the aftermath of World War II, several long-established shoemaking workshops in the Slovenian town of Žiri merged to form the Žiri Shoe Factory. This laid the foundation for what would soon become the iconic Alpina brand - renamed as such in 1951 - continuing a tradition of skilled shoemaking that has existed in the region for centuries.

From the very beginning, Alpina specialized in footwear for challenging mountain and winter environments. The company's earliest products included robust boots catering to the increasing popularity of cross-country and alpine skiing in post-war Europe and by the 1960s and 1970s, Alpina was manufacturing large volumes of ski boots for export to countries where winter sports thrived, including the United States, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Scandinavian nations.

Alpina swiftly became a leader in cross-country ski boot design and by the 1980s was recognized as the world leader in cross-country boots.
One of the most significant milestones was the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics, which marked the company's entry onto the world sporting stage—since then, athletes wearing Alpina boots have secured Olympic gold and World Championship medals.
Today, Alpina holds around a 30% share of the global cross-country ski boot market and equips several national teams, including those from Slovenia, Norway, Sweden, Italy, and Canada.

Continuous investment in research and development has remained central to Alpina's success. The company has repeatedly received the Red Dot Award for product design, especially for its top-tier cross-country ski boots. Alpina also pioneered the creation of the world’s first eco-friendly cross-country ski boot, nearly completely biodegradable, demonstrating its focus on environmental responsibility.

A defining pillar of Alpina’s legacy is its backcountry cross-country ski boots, exemplified by models like the Alaska, Alaska XP, and Outlander collections. These boots are distinguished by their rugged construction, superior insulation, and water resistance—features critical for adventurers who traverse untamed, snowy wilderness. Technical highlights commonly found in Alpina’s backcountry boots include:

- Natural leather uppers for durability and natural breathability
- Reinforced toes and heels for impact protection
- Alpitex or similar waterproof/breathable membranes to prevent snow and water ingress
- Thinsulate insulation for exceptional warmth
- Anatomically shaped footbeds for stability and comfort during long treks
- Precision compatibility with modern backcountry binding systems, such as 75 mm, NNN BC and the Rottefella Explore.

Alpina remains committed to quality, comfort, continuous innovation, and sustainable development - values that are visible in its cross-country and backcountry boot line, which blends Slovenia’s shoemaking heritage with leading-edge technology for modern adventurers.
