Grivel

Grivel

Grivel is a historic climbing equipment brand founded in 1818 at the foot of Mont Blanc in Italy. The company began as a family of blacksmiths producing agricultural tools but quickly shifted focus to meet the needs of 19th century adventurers and tourists. In 1909, Grivel revolutionized mountaineering by manufacturing the first modern crampons at the request of English engineer Oscar Eckenstein. In 1929 Henry Grivel’s son Laurent invented the first crampons with two front points, which enabled climbers to face steep ice directly—a key to conquering challenging routes including the North Face of the Eiger in 1938.

Throughout the 20th century, Grivel developed lighter and stronger crampons, such as the Super Leggero crampon created in 1936 using a nickel-chrome-molybdenum alloy, and introduced the first lightweight ice axe made of aluminum alloy in the 1980s. In 1996, Grivel launched "The Machine," an ice climbing axe with a design that set the standard for technical ice axes across the industry. They also pioneered innovations including anti-balling plates on crampons and safety-focused carabiners, winning design awards such as the Compasso d'Oro in 2016.

Sustainability

Grivel demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability primarily through its environmentally conscious production practices. Six years ago, Grivel installed extensive rooftop solar panels at their Italian factory, which generate at maximum capacity about half a megawatt of power daily. Spread over the full year, this solar energy system produces 10 to 15 percent more energy than the plant consumes, enabling Grivel to not only cover its energy needs but also sell excess power back to the grid in summer months. This sustainable energy use helps prevent the release of significant CO2 emissions—about 1,777 pounds per day—and saves over 1,100 barrels of oil annually.

Additionally, Grivel adopts sustainable production practices that focus on reducing environmental impact, reflecting their pledge to protect the mountains that inspire their brand. Their approach combines artisanal craftsmanship with modern technologies to create durable, high-performing climbing equipment while minimizing ecological footprint.

While climbing hardware companies often face challenges in making manufacturing more sustainable—due largely to the nature of metals and plastics used—Grivel’s investment in renewable energy and commitment to reducing their environmental impact situate them as a forward-thinking brand dedicated to sustainability in the mountain equipment industry12.

No specific third-party sustainability certifications for Grivel were noted in search results, but their solar energy initiative and eco-conscious production ethics are notable elements of their sustainability efforts.
