With the Backland 102 Atomic have produced a truly fantastic high performance backcountry ski, a ski with a perfect balance of efficient sidecut, impressive ascent weight for its size, and modern handling with rockers and a fairly freeride feel. Very light for a ski this wide, the Backland 102 has a poplar / caruba core and weighs in well under 3 kg a par - only 1430 g per ski!! The rocker is pronounced in the tip (clearly in a freeride position), and more measured in the tail to keep the support straight forward and powerful, while remaining fluid when drifting in soft snow. The camber is well defined, so you get a real return of energy from the ski. The Backland FR 102 is hyper-dynamic, which is surprising for a freeride ski! Its fairly modern centring (for this usually fairly traditional category) with a fairly advanced centring, allows you to ski more with your ankles than with a marked tongue support, which means you can ski this backcountry nugget with light boots (2 kg), as well as with aggressive free-rando boots to ski hard and fast. It's also a versatile all-rounder in the mountains and on the slopes, with a very good feel for the slopes and the handling of curves. Inevitably, its very light weight will limit the Backland 102 in hard snow, where absorption won't be up to the standard of a true freeride, with some kickback in the knees, but its level of performance in all other areas makes it surely one of the very best free-rando skis on the market.
Core: Ultralight Woodcore: Light Poplar and caruba wood with a FreeTour Profile, using less fibrelass and more wood to reduce the environmental impact. Rocker: Powder Rocker 20/65/15. Pronounced tip and tail rocker for deep snow with camber underfoot for hard and variable conditions. Tip Shape: The Backland 102 features Atomic's HRZN 3D Backland shaped tips built with perforated materials providing greater flotation, easier turn initiation and a more playful character. Sidewalls: Dura Cap Sidewalls combine a traditional sidewall for maximum power transmission with a small cap providing increased durability. Base: High-density sintered bases absorb wax for good performance in all snow conditions.
